The Kawaguchiko Momiji Kairo (Maple Corridor) is a premier destination for autumn foliage located on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture. The area features approximately 70 maple trees, including some over 100 years old, lining the banks of the Nashiro River. During the autumn season, it serves as the main venue for the "Fuji Kawaguchi Autumn Leaves Festival," where visitors can enjoy the stunning harmony of colorful maple leaves and the majestic silhouette of Mt. Fuji.
This area has long been cherished as a scenic spot offering breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji. Every autumn, the "Fuji Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival" is held to celebrate the changing seasons. This event is designed to showcase the region's rich natural beauty, drawing many visitors who come to enjoy the local culture, seasonal flavors, and the natural splendor of the changing foliage.
The greatest highlight is the natural tunnel created by the maple trees lining both sides of the river. From early to mid-November, the trees turn brilliant shades of red and orange, creating a spectacular landscape alongside the flowing river. Recently, the "Oku no Hosomichi" area has been developed to allow visitors to enjoy the scenery while avoiding the densest crowds. The "Maple Tunnel" is also a famous spot for photography enthusiasts.
The best time to visit is from early to mid-November to see the most vibrant colors. During the day, you can enjoy the vivid colors of the leaves, while the evening offers a magical experience through light illuminations. The illuminations are typically scheduled from sunset (around 4:30 PM) until approximately 9:30 PM. At night, the illuminated autumn leaves create a dramatic and beautiful contrast against the dark silhouette of Mt. Fuji.
During the Autumn Leaves Festival, the area around the venue comes alive with numerous food stalls and craft markets. It is a wonderful opportunity to sample local gourmet food and discover traditional crafts. Nearby, you can also visit cultural sites such as the "Kawaguchiko Craft Park" or the "Itchiku Kubota Art Museum" to combine nature viewing with cultural exploration.
Many popular attractions are clustered around the venue. These include the "Itchiku Kubota Art Museum," which blends nature with striking architectural design, and the "Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum," where you can enjoy music in a beautiful setting. Additionally, the Lake Kawaguchiko area offers many hotels and hot spring (onsen) facilities, making it easy to plan a stay after viewing the autumn colors.
The Kawaguchiko area can become quite windy and cold in the autumn, so please prepare warm clothing. A thick jacket or coat is highly recommended, especially when viewing the night illuminations. For easier movement through crowds or uneven terrain, using a baby carrier instead of a stroller may be more convenient.
