The Katsushika Noryo Fireworks Festival is a premier summer event held along the Edogawa riverbank in the Shibamata area of Katsushika, Tokyo. Since its inception in 1953, this festival has been affectionately known as the 'Shibamata Fireworks.' One of its most defining features is the close proximity between the launch site and the spectators, allowing the approximately 13,000 fireworks to deliver an overwhelming and immersive experience of light and sound against the backdrop of the Edogawa river.
The history of this festival dates back to 1953. Originally organized by the Katsushika Tourism Association, it has evolved into a deeply rooted local tradition. Since 1980, it has been co-hosted with the Katsushika City government, growing into the large-scale-spectacle seen today. It is a beloved cultural staple that defines the summer-time atmosphere of eastern Tokyo.
The highlight of the event is the massive display of roughly 13,000 fireworks spreading across the open sky above the Edogawa riverbank. Because the distance between the launch point and the audience is relatively short, visitors can feel the direct impact of the sound and the intense visual beauty.
