Katsure Castles Ruins is a historic site located on the Katsuren Peninsula in Uruma City, Okinawa. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it holds immense historical and cultural value. Built on hills ranging from 60 to 100 meters in elevation, the castle utilizes the natural terrain to create a unique landscape. The most striking feature is the beautifully curved stone walls that follow the contours of the land. The ruins are said to have been established in the early 14th century by the local lords of the Katsuren region. Excavations have uncovered Chinese ceramics from the Yuan Dynasty, proving that Katsure was a vital hub for maritime trade in East Asia. In 2000, the site was officially designated as part of the "UNESCO World Heritage" list under the 'Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Ryukyu Kingdom.'
The highlight of the site is the elegant, sweeping curves of the stone walls. The structure is divided into several levels (Ichino-kuruwa, Nino-kuruwa, and Sanno-kuruwa), and as you climb the stone steps, the view gradually opens up to reveal more of the ocean. Near the second level, you can see traces of a former shrine, offering a glimpse into the architectural styles of the past. The view of the horizon and the scattered islands in the East China Sea is truly breathtaking and offers a sense of standing where ancient heroes once stood.
While beautiful year-round, the period from March to June is highly recommended when the weather is clear and the sea appears particularly vibrant. Bright daylight is perfect for capturing the intricate details of the stone walls and the blue ocean. For a more emotional and serene experience, visiting during the late afternoon allows you to witness a stunning sunset that paints the sky in hues of orange and gold. Please note that the terrain involves steep slopes, so sun protection is essential during the heat of the day.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the historical ruins. Depending on the season, some EV carts may be available to assist with the elevation changes. At the base of the castle, Amari Park offers a more interactive way to learn about the area's history through cultural exhibits and live performances. This provides a deeper, multi-dimensional understanding of the Ryukyu Kingdom's lifestyle and the historical context of the castle.
