Kasugayama Shrine is a significant spiritual site located on the slopes of Mt. Kasuga in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the spirit of Uesugi Kenshin, a legendary figure in Japanese history. The architecture is characterized by the 'Shinmei-zukuri' style, featuring a striking, straight, and robust design. The shrine grounds are a place where history and literature intertwine, featuring various historical artifacts and monuments. The adjacent Kasigayama Shrine Memorial Hall offers a deeper look into the local heritage, displaying precious items and documents related to the deity and the historical figures of the region.
The shrine was founded in 1901 (Meiji 34) by Sumiharu Ogawa, a former retainer of the Takada Domain who deeply admired the deity. The establishment was supported by figures like Itagaki Taisuke, a key figure in the modernization of the Japanese postal system. Sumiharu Ogawa was also the father of Mei Ogawa, one of Japan's most renowned children's authors. Mei Ogawa lived within the shrine precincts during his youth (from age 15 to 20), creating a profound historical link between the site and Japanese literature. This connection makes the shrine not just a religious site, but a cultural landmark preserved by generations of local figures.
The centerpiece of the shrine is the main hall, built in the dignified Shinmei-zukuri architectural style. Visitors can also find a stone monument engraved with the poem 'Kumo no Gotoku' (Like the Clouds) by the author Mei Ogawa, as well as stone statues inspired by his works, highlighting the area's literary significance. Another notable feature is the statue that served as the model for the Uesugi Kenshin statue created by the sculptor Takigawa Bidō. The shrine is also a vibrant cultural hub, drawing many visitors for traditional New Year's visits (Hatsumode) and other seasonal rituals.
The scenery around the shrine changes beautifully with the seasons. The area is particularly stunning from mid-October to late October during the autumn foliage season. In December, the shrine becomes a lively center for New Year's celebrations. Please note that the Kasugayama Shrine Memorial Hall is open from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM, but it is closed for the winter season from December 1st to March 31st. We recommend checking the schedule before your visit to ensure you can enjoy the museum exhibits.

If you plan to visit the Memorial Hall, please check the admission fees in advance. As with most Shinto shrines, please follow traditional etiquette during your visit.
