Kasato Island is a beautiful island located within the Setonaikai National Park in Kudamatsu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is connected to the mainland by the Kasato Ohashi Bridge (a Ringer Lauterach bridge structure) completed in 1970. The island's perimeter is approximately 30km, featuring a rugged coastline with numerous striking rock formations. In 2019, it was registered as a "Minato Oasis Kudamatsu-Kasato Island," establishing it as a hub for tourism and recreation. The island is also known as a filming location for the movie "Nagi no Shima," highlighting its well-preserved natural beauty.
The name of the island is said to originate from a legend where the deity of Itsukushima placed a hat (kasa) upon it. From 1919 to 1977, the Kasato Cruise Ship operated regular services to the island. Today, the island is easily accessible by land via the Kasato Ohashi Bridge, with local roads such as Prefectural Route 173 and 174 providing easy access. The island also maintains deep local traditions, such as the "Kasato Fire Festival" organized by the local Kasato Island 88 Temple Pilgrimage Association.
There are several spots on Kasato Island perfect for enjoying natural beauty. One of the most iconic is "Yuhigami Cape" (Sunset Cape), a renowned spot for viewing sunsets in Japan. The view of the sun setting through the "Hanaguri Rock" is particularly stunning during winter, when the sea surface glows in deep crimson. Another must-visit is the "Sea Promenade," a 300-meter path located south of Hanaguri Beach that gives you the sensation of walking directly above the ocean.
