Kasama Tsutsuji Park is a scenic park situated at an elevation of 143m in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Spanning an area of approximately 7 hectares, the park is home to about 8,500 azalea plants, including diverse varieties such as Kirishima, Kurume, Yama-tsutsuji, and Oshiba. The most striking feature is the sight of the entire mountain being dyed in vibrant shades of red during the Golden Week period. At the summit, a dedicated observation terrace allows visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the Kasama cityscape and the scenery along National Route 50.
The Kasama region is well-known for its thriving culture of cultivating and appreciating azaleas. The specific varieties planted here, such as the Kirishima and Kurume types, are essential elements of the local natural landscape. The seasonal transformation of colors across the mountain reflects the unique natural environment and botanical heritage of the region.
The primary attraction is the massive colony of azaleas that covers the mountain slopes. Depending on the variety, the colors and shapes create a rich, textured tapestry across the landscape. During the peak season around Golden Week, the entire mountain is enveloped in brilliant hues. Additionally, the summit observation terrace provides a perfect vantage point to view the town of Kasama through a frame of blooming flowers. Well-maintained paths allow visitors to wander through various sections of the park to enjoy the scenery up close.
The best time to visit is from April to May, with the peak occurring around Golden Week. This is when the mountain turns a vivid red. Bright daylight hours are ideal for capturing the intense colors of the flowers and enjoying the clear views from the summit. While the park grounds are generally open 24 hours a day, please note that the paid areas managed during the Kasama Tsutsuji Festival operate from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The park features a natural, hilly terrain with established walking routes that lead through the azalea groves. The summit terrace serves as an excellent spot to rest and take in the surrounding scenery. During the annual Kasama Tsutsuji Festival, the experience focuses on strolling through the changing colors of the mountain and enjoying the seasonal atmosphere.
The park is surrounded by the charming streets of Kasama. The area along National Route 50 features various facilities and serves as part of the scenic backdrop visible from the park. Furthermore, the Kasama area is famous for its traditional pottery (Kasama-yaki), making it a wonderful destination where natural beauty and traditional Japanese craftsmanship coexist.
During the Kasama Tsutsuji Festival, admission fees for certain areas may be required. Please note that cash is the primary method of payment; please check local signage for any changes in accepted methods.

No advanced reservations are required to enter the park. However, please follow local instructions regarding the use of paid sections during festival periods.
As the park is located on a mountain with a 143m elevation and features sloped paths, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. If you plan to spend time at the summit terrace, bringing a hat for sun protection and water for hydration is advised.
Photography is permitted throughout the park. Please be mindful of other visitors and follow local etiquette when taking photos.
Wheelchair-accessible parking spaces are available. While some areas may have canes/walking sticks provided for stability, please be aware that the terrain is sloped and can be uneven. Exercise caution when walking.
