Located in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, the "Kariyadono Geba Zakura" is an incredibly precious single cherry tree designated as a National Special Natural Monument. The species is Akameshiroba Yamazakura (mountain cherry), and its age is estimated to be over 800 years. Known as one of the most significant cherry trees in Japan, its overwhelming presence and deep historical roots have led many to protect and cherish it through the centuries. Legend has it that in 1193, the famous warrior Minamoto no Yoritomo dismounted his horse at this very location during a hunt in the Fuji area. This legend is said to be the origin of the name "Kariyadono Geba Zakura" (the cherry tree where one dismounts). It is also known by the nickname "Komazome no Sakura," referring to a place where horses were tethered. The tree has long been associated with historical figures, including Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the 15th Shogun of the Edo period, who composed poetry regarding this tree. Designated as a National Special Natural Monument in 1952, it stands as a cultural heritage site that symbolizes Japanese history.
The greatest draw is the sight of the massive, ancient tree in full bloom, showcasing the delicate beauty of the mountain cherry blossoms. Because there are no tall buildings in the vicinity, the single cherry tree appears to float beautifully against the blue sky and the backdrop of Mount Fuji.
