Karatsu Castle is a historic fortress located in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Originally constructed in 1607, the site is now beautifully maintained as Maizuru Park. The most striking feature of the castle is the observation deck atop the castle tower (tenshu), which offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Genkai Sea and the Matsuura Lagoon. At night, the castle is illuminated, revealing a completely different, mystical atmosphere compared to the daytime.
The castle has a rich history dating back to the Edo period. Following the abolition of the han system in 1871, many structures were dismantled, but the area was later developed and opened as Maizuru Park in 1877. The current castle tower is a reconstructed five-story structure completed in 1966. In recent years, various parts of the castle-style architecture, such as the Higo-bori moat and the Taiko-do, have been restored to preserve the historical atmosphere. In 2017, it was officially selected as one of the "Continued 100名城" (Continued 100名城/Famous Japanese Castles).
The highlight of Karatsu Castle is undoubtedly the observation deck of the castle tower. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding natural landscape. Other notable features include the historic stone walls, the restored Higo-bori moat, and the various structures that allow you to feel the weight of history. Additionally, the nearby Karatsu Shrine, which once served as a place of prayer for the Karatsu lords, adds a deep layer of cultural context to your visit.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. In the spring, the park is adorned with seasonal colors, including the famous wisteria (a natural monument). The castle also offers a unique experience after sunset, when the castle tower is illuminated, creating a stunning silhouette against the night sky. Depending on the time of day, the light reflecting off the sea and the lagoon provides a different visual experience every time you visit.
Inside the castle tower, you can explore exhibits regarding the structure and history of the fortress. A walk around the perimeter of the castle grounds allows you to explore the restored watchtowers, stone walls, and the Taiko-do. The surrounding park area is perfect for a relaxing stroll where you can immerse yourself in both history and nature.
