Karasayama Castle is a historic mountain castle site located in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is celebrated as one of the Seven Famous Castles of the Kanto region and is particularly noted for its exceptionally high stone walls. Today, the site features Karasuyama Shrine at its summit, allowing visitors to enjoy a seamless blend of historical castle architecture, breathtaking views of the Kanto Plain, and the natural beauty of the changing seasons. It is an ideal destination for those seeking a fusion of historical exploration and nature-filled hiking.
Karasuyama Castle is historically known as the seat of the Sano clan. Due to its strategic location between the powerful Hojo clan of Sagami and the Uesugi clan of Echigo, it served as a frequent battlefield. The site is famous for its resilience, having successfully repelled numerous attacks by the legendary Uesugi Kenshin, earning it a reputation as one of the finest mountain castles in the Kanto region. During the Edo period, the castle was abandoned as the Sano Castle was constructed at the foot of the mountain. Currently, the site preserves its historical integrity, with a shrine enshrined at the former main enclosure (Honmaru).
The most striking features of the site are the well-preserved stone walls and the structural remains of the castle fortifications. At the former main enclosure, you will find Karasuyama Shrine, surrounded by stone walls that evoke a deep sense of history. Another highlight is Tengu-iwa (Tengu Rock), which offers a sweeping view of the Kanto Plain; on clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji or the Tokyo Skytree in the distance. Other notable features include the 'Masugata' (rectangular gate structures) and 'Horikiri' (moats/trenches) that showcase the original defensive layout of the castle.
The landscape changes beautifully throughout the year. In spring, visitors can enjoy blooming cherry blossoms and vibrant azaleas, while autumn brings a stunning display of colorful foliage. Additionally, special illumination events such as 'Sano Akari' are held during specific periods (for example, late November). During these events, the shrine and castle ruins are beautifully lit up. Please note that light-up sessions typically occur between 16:00 and 20:00, but it is highly recommended to check official event details in advance.
Visitors can enjoy hiking through the well-maintained trails that wind through the natural landscape. The terrain offers a rewarding experience for those interested in exploring historical ruins and the natural environment. Activities include visiting the shrine at the summit, exploring the castle's defensive structures, and enjoying the panoramic scenery from viewpoints like Tengu-iwa. Nearby, you can find the historic 'Akami Onsen Hotel Ichinokan,' which has been in business since the Taisho era, and 'Shiroyama Park,' a lovely spot for enjoying cherry blossoms and azaleas. The area is also widely known as the 'Karasuyama Prefectural Natural Park,' making it a great region for experiencing the harmony of nature and heritage.
As this is a mountain castle site with hiking trails, comfortable walking shoes and activewear are highly recommended. If you plan to visit during evening light-up events or during seasonal transitions, please bring clothing suitable for temperature changes. As this is a natural environment, please be mindful of your surroundings. When taking photographs, please avoid occupying specific spots for extended periods of time to ensure all visitors can enjoy the view.
