The history of this building dates back to the original Matsue Branch of the Bank of Japan, established in 1918. While the original structure was a two-story wooden building, it was rebuilt in 1938 into the current reinforced concrete structure designed by Uhei Nagano, a master of Western classical bank architecture. After the Bank of Japan relocated in 1981, a local preservation movement led to the building's rebirth as 'Karakolo Kobo' in 2000. In 2016, its historical significance was officially recognized when it was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The entire building is a living museum. A standout feature is the underground vault, which preserves the heavy steel doors and atmosphere of its banking days, now serving as an exhibition space. Outside, the garden terrace features the famous 'Lucky Pink Post,' a cultural symbol where visitors can drop letters to bring good fortune and connections.
