Karakoro Kobo is a unique craft center located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, housed in the former Bank of Japan Matsue Branch building. Designed by the renowned architect Uhei Nagano in a Western classical style, this building is a precious Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Today, it serves as a vibrant cultural space featuring workshops that combine production and sales, as well as various restaurants, cafes, and rental spaces. The name 'Karakoro' is derived from the rhythmic sound of people wearing traditional wooden clogs (geta) crossing the nearby Matsue Bridge, evoking a nostalgic and charming Japanese atmosphere.
The history of this building dates back to the original Matsue Branch of the Bank of Japan, established in 1918. While the original structure was a two-story wooden building, it was rebuilt in 1938 into the current reinforced concrete structure designed by Uhei Nagano, a master of Western classical bank architecture. After the Bank of Japan relocated in 1981, a local preservation movement led to the building's rebirth as 'Karakolo Kobo' in 2000. In 2016, its historical significance was officially recognized when it was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The entire building is a living museum. A standout feature is the underground vault, which preserves the heavy steel doors and atmosphere of its banking days, now serving as an exhibition space. Visitors can observe original architectural details such as the old counters, vintage lighting, second-floor corridors, and ornate window lattices. Outside, the garden terrace features the famous 'Lucky Pink Post,' a cultural symbol where visitors can drop letters to bring good fortune and connections.
While the facility is enjoyable year-round, we highly recommend relaxing at the 'Garden Terrace' on sunny days. You can enjoy the fresh air alongside local cafe menus. The main building remains open until 21:00, and the Karakoro Food Hall operates until 23:00, making it an excellent spot for a late dinner or a relaxing evening stroll. Since exhibitions and events change seasonally, there is always something new to discover with every visit.
Connect with Japanese tradition through hands-on craft workshops. The facility hosts makers who both produce and sell their wares, offering a chance to learn traditional techniques. The third floor also provides space for tea ceremonies and various classes. Additionally, the underground gallery frequently hosts art exhibitions and concerts, providing a deep immersion into the arts.
Karakolo Kobo is a perfect base for exploring Matsue. It is located near major landmarks such as Matsue Castle and the Shimane Prefectural Government Office. It is also conveniently close to the Karakoro Plaza Boat Boarding Point, making it an ideal starting point for a sightseeing cruise along the Matsue Horikawa moat. You can easily explore the nearby Kyo-ten shopping district on foot to experience the local culture.
