Kanoya Rose Garden is one of Japan's largest rose gardens by both area and scale, located within Kirishima Oka Park in Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The vast 8-hectare estate is home to approximately 25,000 rose bushes. Thanks to the warm climate of Kagoshima, the garden is famous for reaching its peak bloom earlier than many other locations in Japan, particularly during the spring season. Visitors can immerse themselves in the enchanting scent of roses within this expansive, natural landscape.
The area is widely recognized as a "Town of Roses," a title reflecting the local commitment to community development centered around rose cultivation. Kanoya Rose Garden provides a scenic landscape that harmonizes perfectly with the local environment. The garden also serves as a hub for spreading rose culture through seasonal events such as the Kanoya Rose Festival. Furthermore, the cultivation of unique local varieties, such as the 'Princess Kanoya,' has made the garden a beloved symbol of the region.

The garden features a diverse collection of roses, allowing visitors to observe various types including Wild Roses, Old Roses, Modern Roses, and English Roses. A standout feature is the observation deck, which offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, allowing you to enjoy the roses alongside the stunning scenery. As part of the Kirishima Oka Park facilities, the area also offers more than just floral viewing; visitors can enjoy camping, go-karting, and even visiting a traditional tea room, making it a versatile destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The roses typically bloom twice a year, during the spring and autumn seasons. The spring season, particularly around Golden Week in May, is the most highly anticipated time as the garden reaches full bloom ahead of much of the country. The autumn season also offers a different, beautiful expression of the roses. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the vivid colors and textures of the flowers.

Beyond admiring the roses, there are many ways to engage with the environment. As part of the Kirishima Oka Park complex, the area is equipped for various activities such as camping, go-karting, and even flying disc golf. For those seeking a more tranquil experience, the presence of facilities like the tea room allows for a peaceful moment of relaxation amidst nature.
The area surrounding the garden within Kirishima Oka Park is well-equipped for tourism. It features various facilities such as an observation deck, picnic areas, a multi-purpose plaza, and a children's playground, making it an ideal destination for families. With various accommodations and sightseeing spots scattered nearby, it serves as an excellent base for exploring Kanoya City.
Since the garden covers a vast area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. As the terrain includes some slopes and uneven paths, practical clothing is best. Regarding payments, the onsite shops and facilities accept both cash and credit cards. While English signage may be limited, the facility is an open-air natural site. When taking photographs, please follow local rules and ensure that the natural environment and plants are not disturbed.
