Located in Hioki City, Kagoshima, Kanosuke Distillery is a unique facility that is carving a path into the world of whisky production, backed by the 140-year history of Kosetsu Shuzo. More than just a production facility, it is a place designed to let visitors experience the profound process of whisky making and the philosophy of craftsmanship through all five senses. It is a rare and precious spot where you can witness the birth of next-generation Japanese whisky being sent from Kagoshima to the global stage.
The region holds a rich history of shochu brewing through Kosetsu Shuzo, which has continued for over 140 years. While inheriting these traditional techniques and spirit, the distillery has embarked on a new challenge: whisky production. Established in 2017 as the whisky-making arm of Kosetsu Shuzo, the facility has evolved through its current structure to bridge tradition and innovation. It is a place where you can experience the historical process of how the 'monozukuri' (craftsmanship) spirit, cultivated through generations of shochu making, is sublimated into the new form of whisky.

The distillery offers guided tours where visitors can learn about the various stages of whisky production. Rather than just visually observing the process, you can learn about the meticulous attention to detail, the selection of materials, and the respect for the environment. The product lineup features high-quality whiskies, including the signature single malt 'Kanosuke,' and the technical aspects behind its production are a major point of interest for enthusiasts.
The distillery is open six days a week, from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10:00 and 16:30. Please note that it is closed on Mondays. You can observe the whisky-making process regardless of the season. To ensure a deep and meaningful understanding of the production steps, we recommend checking the official website in advance to plan your visit during optimal hours.
The core of the experience is the guided tour of the whisky production process. The theme is not merely looking at the products, but using your senses to feel the 'essence of craftsmanship.' The experience provides an educational opportunity to understand the background of whisky making that utilizes the unique characteristics of the Kagoshima region.
The area around Hioki City is a place where rich nature and traditional shochu brewing coexist. To access the distillery, you can take the JR Kagoshima Main Line from Kagoshima-Chuo Station to Ijuin Station (approx. 20 minutes), and then take a taxi for about 20 minutes. Alternatively, the local 'Hiokigo' shared shuttle service is also available. It is highly efficient to combine a visit here with a drive through Kagoshima City or a tour of other historic distilleries in the area.
As the tour involves observing the production process, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing. Since this is a facility dealing with alcohol, drinking and driving is strictly prohibited.
