Kannabi no Sato is a scenic landscape centered around the Inabuchi Rice Terraces, located in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture. This area has been officially selected as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan.' Surrounded by rich nature, the landscape showcases the traditional rice cultivation scenery that has sustained local life for generations. The terraced fields change their expression with every season, offering visitors a profound sense of Japan's original, quintessential landscapes.
This area is deeply etched with the history of the Asuka Period. The rice terraces are more than just a beautiful view; they have historically served as the foundation for local livelihoods, supporting rice cultivation, sericulture (silk farming), and vegetable farming. This agricultural heritage, adapted to the natural topography, was designated as a National Important Cultural Landscape in 2011. The region is a place where nature and ancient history coexist, with nearby archaeological sites such as the Kitora and Takamatsuzuka Tombs scattered throughout the area.
The scenery at the Inabuchi Rice Terraces varies beautifully depending on the season. In summer, you will see a vast expanse of lush, vibrant green fields. In autumn, the landscape turns into a shimmering sea of golden rice stalks. A major highlight is the 'Scarecrow Road,' where unique and creative scarecrows line the paths, adding a touch of whimsy and local charm to the scenery. These elements serve as symbols of the local culture and the passing of the seasons.
The most striking feature of this location is the dramatic seasonal transformation. From June to August, the landscape is filled with the vitality of bright green rice paddies. From September to October, visitors can enjoy the golden hues of ripening rice and the brilliant colors of red spider lilies (Higanbana) blooming around the terraces. Visiting during the autumn is particularly rewarding, as the 'Scarecrow Contest' displays a variety of highly creative and characterful scarecrows.
