The Kanmon Tunnel Human Entrance is a dedicated tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists that runs beneath the Kanmon Straits, connecting Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture (Honshu) with Moji Ward in Fukuoka Prefecture (Kyushu). The most striking feature of this location is the ability to travel between the two main islands of Japan on foot. The entrance is designed with a unique pufferfish (fugu) motif, making it a popular and charming photo spot for travelers. It serves both as a practical transit route and a fascinating part of any sightseeing circuit.
The history of this route dates back many decades. Following the opening of the Kanmon Railway Tunnel in 1942, the road tunnel was completed on March 9, 1958. The tunnel was constructed beneath the narrowest part of the Kanmon Straits, known as the Hayakari Seto. Having overcome the geological challenges and material shortages of the era, this tunnel has long served as a vital piece of infrastructure connecting Honshu and Kyushu. In the past, it was a hub for travelers, supported by nearby rest areas like the Shimonoseki and Moji PAs.
The greatest draw is the extraordinary sensation of walking beneath the ocean floor. The entrance features a large, welcoming portal shaped like a pufferfish, reflecting the local maritime culture. Inside the tunnel, the design continues to entertain visitors: the walls are decorated with illustrations of seaweed and fish, while the ceiling depicts the changing sky from morning to night. Additionally, visitors can learn more about the local history at the nearby 'Kanmon Plaza' exhibition facility.
Since the tunnel is located underground, it is unaffected by weather conditions. This makes it an ideal option for walking or jogging even on rainy or extremely sunny days. The tunnel is open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, but it is closed during the late-night hours. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to ensure a smooth transition between Shimonoseki and the Mojiko area. It is a reliable way to move between the two cities regardless of the season.
