Kanda-ke is a traditional folk museum located in the historic village of Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture. This facility is beloved by many visitors as a living museum that preserves the traditional architectural styles and the wisdom of ancestors. Inside, you can witness the authentic way of life in old Japan, featuring a central hearth (irori) and various tools used in daily life.
Kanda-ke is a Gassho-zukuri building that has been preserved and passed down through many generations. The structure serves as a vital historical record, demonstrating how people lived and adapted to the harsh natural environment of the mountains. It is a precious site where you can learn how architectural styles and the use of daily tools have evolved and been protected over a span of 200 years.
The museum offers different exhibits and spaces on every floor. On the 1st floor, you can relax in a space featuring a traditional irori (sunken hearth), allowing you to feel the atmosphere of a classic Japanese room. The middle floor features a "Hi-mado" (fire window), a structural element used to monitor the fire. From the 2nd to the 4th floors, the museum displays various folk tools that supported daily life, such as equipment for sake brewing, forestry, sericulture (silk production), and weaving. Additionally, the 4th floor includes a viewing space located in the attic area.
The scenery of Shirakawa-go changes beautifully with the seasons. In summer (July and August), the lush greenery provides a stunning backdrop for the thatched-roof Gassho-zukuri houses. The museum is open from 10:00 to 16:00 (last entry at 15:50). We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate details of the architecture and the displayed artifacts.
By exploring the different levels of Kanda-ke, you can learn about traditional Japanese living. Through the hearth space on the 1st floor and the tools displayed on the upper floors, you can connect with the ingenuity of the past. The museum also features signs for commemorative photography, allowing you to capture wonderful photos against the backdrop of a traditional Japanese interior.
Kanda-ke is situated within the Shirakawa-go village area. The surrounding landscape is dotted with beautiful Gassho-zukuri farmhouses, making it a perfect area for a scenic stroll. The entire village maintains its historic landscape, offering a peaceful environment to enjoy traditional architecture and nature.
