Lake Kanayama is a beautiful reservoir formed by the Kanayama Dam. The development of this area has been driven by the 'Minami-Furano Village Promotion and Development Plan,' which focused on utilizing the dam for tourism and local revitalization. In 1993, the area was designated as a 'Dam Open to the Community' by the Ministry of Construction (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism), leading to increased public access. As a result, the lake area is now divided into several themed zones designed for recreation, sports, and outdoor stays.

A major highlight is the 'Sun, Forest, and Lake Festival' (Kanayama Lake Festival), held on the last Saturday and Sunday of July, which features spectacular fireworks displays.
