Lake Kanayama is a beautiful reservoir formed by the Kanayama Dam. The surrounding landscape is characterized by untouched primeval forests of Ezo spruce and Sakhalin fir, maintaining a pristine natural environment. The area is well-equipped with various zones, including campsites and sports areas, making it a versatile destination for both day-trippers and overnight guests. Depending on the season, you can enjoy diverse activities such as canoeing in the summer or ice fishing on the frozen lake in the winter.
The development of this area has been driven by the 'Minami-Furano Village Promotion and Development Plan,' which focused on utilizing the dam for tourism and local revitalization. In 1993, the area was designated as a 'Dam Open to the Community' by the Ministry of Construction (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism), leading to increased public access. As a result, the lake area is now divided into several themed zones designed for recreation, sports, and outdoor stays.
Lake Kanayama is uniquely structured into several specialized areas. The 'Day-trip Walking Area' features observation decks with sweeping views of the dam; the 'Waterfront Accommodation Area' provides lodging and campsites; the 'Family Area' offers easy access to the water; and the 'Sports Area' is perfect for canoeing and park golf. A major highlight is the 'Sun, Forest, and Lake Festival' (Kanayama Lake Festival), held on the last Saturday and Sunday of July, which features spectacular fireworks displays.
Activities change dramatically with the seasons. During the summer (June to September), the focus is on water-based activities like canoeing and rafting, as well as camping under the stars. In winter, when the lake surface freezes completely, the area becomes a popular spot for ice fishing to catch Wakasagi (smelt). The high-altitude viewpoints offer different, breathtaking scenery depending on the time of year.
The lake is a hub for water sports, frequently hosting canoeing and rafting competitions and practice sessions. For those looking to stay active on land, the well-maintained sports areas allow for games like park golf. The camping areas provide a wonderful way to immerse yourself in nature, offering a chance to stay overnight right by the water's edge.
Lake Kanayama is conveniently located near other major Hokkaido tourist destinations such as Furano, Biei, and Hoshino Resorts Tomamu. Additionally, nearby hot spring resorts like Yunozawa Onsen allow travelers to combine outdoor adventures with relaxing hot spring experiences, creating a perfect sightseeing route.
