Kamawarizaki is a breathtaking scenic spot located on the border between Kitakami Town in Ishinomaki City and Minamisanriku Town in Miyagi Prefecture. The site is characterized by a unique rock formation that has been split in two by marine erosion. Looking through this gap at the sea offers a powerful sense of nature's strength. As one of the '100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Beaches in Japan,' the area is part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park, ensuring its rich natural environment is well-preserved.
An ancient legend is tied to this land. It is said that during a dispute over village boundaries, a giant whale was washed ashore. As the conflict over ownership intensified, a lightning strike split the cape into two. Local people believed this event was a divine judgment to settle the dispute. This legend continues to be passed down as a symbolic event that defined the regional boundaries.
The greatest attraction is the view framed by the steep cliffs and the split rock. The gap between the two rocks acts like a natural 'picture frame,' highlighting the horizon and the rising sun. This architectural beauty created by nature is world-renowned. Visitors can also enjoy the sight of waves crashing against the rugged cliffs and the shifting colors of the sea, which transitions from emerald green to deep blue.
There are specific times when you can witness truly extraordinary sights. In the early morning of mid-February and late October, you can witness the 'Sunrise through the Rocks,' where the sun rises perfectly through the gap between the two formations. This creates a highly dramatic spectacle against the colors of the dawn sky. Additionally, the site is a wonderful spot for sunset viewing, as the setting sun settles beautifully into the silhouette of the rocks.
The experience here focuses on the quiet observation of natural forms. You can observe the unique geological structures and practice landscape photography while gazing at the cliffs. The surrounding area is well-maintained as a natural park, allowing for peaceful walks along the coastline.
Various nature-rich spots are scattered around Kamawarizaki. In the Minamisanriku area, you can find the Kamawarizaki Campground for a stay surrounded by nature. Nearby, you can also explore other charming areas of the Sanriku Coast, such as Mount Kinka or Tashirojima, known as the 'Cat Island.'
As there are no shops or facilities directly at the scenic viewpoint, please note that any nearby services will likely require cash. It is highly recommended to carry Japanese Yen.

Because the terrain includes rocky areas and steep cliffs, please wear sturdy, walking shoes. Since temperatures drop significantly during early morning sunrises or late evenings, bring warm clothing to stay comfortable.
Photography of the landscape is free to enjoy. If you are using a tripod, please ensure you follow local rules and do not obstruct the path.
Due to the natural terrain, there are many uneven surfaces and steps. This area is not suitable for wheelchair access.
