Kamuiwakka Falls, whose name means 'Water of the Gods' in the Ainu language, is a truly extraordinary natural wonder located in the heart of Shiretko. Situated deep within the primeval forests, approximately 10km past the Shiretko Goko (Five Lakes) area, this site offers a one-of-a-kind experience: a river that serves as a natural hot spring. As you trek upstream, the water temperature rises from approximately 25°C at the starting point to a soothing 35–38°C near the 'Waterfall No. 4' area. It is a premier adventure spot in Shiretko where you can feel the raw energy of nature against your skin.
The area has long been revered by the Ainu people as a sacred site. While visitors once enjoyed the hot spring pools freely, regulations were introduced following the designation of the area as a World Heritage site to ensure both visitor safety and environmental preservation. Today, the site is managed through a strict reservation-only system. The surrounding landscape is also shaped by intense geological activity; nearby Mt. Io (Sulfur Mountain) features active fumaroles and a history of sulfur mining, adding a sense of dynamic geological history to the region.
The highlight of Kamuiwakka Falls is the process of trekking upstream. As you navigate the riverbed, you will experience the changing water temperatures and the physical challenge of climbing over natural rock formations. The water often takes on a stunning emerald-green hue due to natural chemical reactions near the falls. Additionally, about 1km downstream, the Kamuiwakka River plunges 30 meters directly into the Sea of Okhotsk. Because this massive waterfall is difficult to access by land, it is best viewed from a sightseeing boat to truly appreciate its scale.
River-climbing activities are primarily available during the summer months. Because access depends on water temperature and environmental conditions, it is highly recommended to check the latest availability before your trip. During the hot summer months, the contrast between the warm river flow and the cool forest air provides a refreshing and invigorating experience. Please note that shuttle bus operations and private vehicle restrictions change depending on the season, so plan your itinerary accordingly.
The most popular activity is 'Kamuiwakka River Climbing.' This adventure involves wading upstream through the warm water, feeling the temperature rise as you move higher. It is more than just sightseeing; it is an immersive experience of becoming part of the landscape. For your safety, wearing a helmet is mandatory during this activity.
The area is surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of Shiretoko National Park. You can visit the Shiretoko Goko (Five Lakes) to enjoy walks along elevated wooden boardwalks or guided nature trails. Nearby, you can also explore the volcanic landscapes of Mt. Io (Sulfur Mountain), where you can witness active steam vents and remnants of historical sulfur mining. Combining these sites allows for a comprehensive exploration of Shiretko's diverse natural environment.
When participating in the river climbing activity, wear clothing that is comfortable for movement and can easily get wet. Since the riverbed can be slippery, renting water shoes is highly recommended. Helmets are a strict requirement for safety. To protect the delicate ecosystem, please stay within designated areas and follow all local rules. During periods of vehicle restrictions, you will be required to use the designated shuttle bus service.
