Cape Kamui is a breathtaking natural landmark situated at the tip of the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido. A scenic promenade known as 'Charenka no Komichi' leads from the traditional 'Nyojin Kinsei' (prohibited to women) gate toward the tip of the cape, covering a distance of approximately 770 meters. This path is characterized by its dramatic topography, with the vast Sea of Japan stretching out on both sides. At the very end of the cape stands a lighthouse, offering an unparalleled 300-degree panoramic view of the endless horizon.
The area holds a unique historical significance due to the presence of the 'Nyojin Kinsei' gate, a site where women were traditionally restricted from entering. This tradition reflects a deep-seated respect and awe for the power of nature. Today, the site is strictly managed to balance nature conservation and tourism. Access gates and opening hours are regulated based on the season and weather conditions to preserve the delicate natural environment of the Shakotan area.
The greatest draw of Cape Kamui is the spectacular view of the Sea of Japan encountered while walking the 'Charenka no Komichi' path. As you progress, the landscape shifts between dramatic cliffs and the wide, open horizon. In early summer, the area becomes particularly beautiful with the blooming of Ezo Kanzo (daylilies), allowing visitors to observe the seasonal changes in local flora. The view from the lighthouse at the tip of the cape provides an unobstructed, majestic vista of the ocean.
The landscape changes significantly depending on the season. In early summer, the sight of blooming Ezo Kanzo flowers adds a vibrant touch to the scenery. Please note that opening hours vary by month; during the winter season (December to March), the hours are shortened to 10:00–15:00. It is highly recommended to check the weather before visiting, as the gate status and entry may be restricted due to high winds or heavy rain.
The primary activity here is hiking toward the tip of the cape. The round-trip walk from the entrance to the lighthouse takes approximately 40 minutes. While the promenade is well-maintained, it is a natural environment, so the experience is centered around a scenic walk. It is a perfect way to immerse yourself in the natural environment of Shakotan while observing the rugged coastline and seasonal plants.

The Shakotan region is also famous for its seasonal delicacies, particularly sea urchin (Uni). Visitors can enjoy exploring the scenic coastline and then indulging in the local seafood culture at nearby facilities.
Since you will be walking along a natural promenade, comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for movement are essential. Because weather conditions can change rapidly, carrying a windproof and waterproof jacket is highly recommended. While some English signage is available, please check local signs for specific instructions. Payments at nearby facilities generally accept cash, credit cards, and transit IC cards. Always check the weather forecast beforehand, as gates may close due to wind or rain.
