Kamoyama Park is a sprawling 15-hectare urban park located adjacent to the residential areas of Kamo City, Niigata. The park's layout features the historic Aomi Shrine as a central point, surrounded by lush greenery, scenic walking paths, and wide observation plazas. A defining feature of this park is its status as one of Japan's premier sites for Yuki-tsubaki (Snow Camellias). With approximately 1,300 trees across 100 species, the park offers a unique spectacle in spring when the camellias and cherry blossoms bloom simultaneously. Beyond the flora, the park is a hub for recreation, featuring a dedicated Squirrel Garden for interacting with chipmunks, a roller slider for children, various sculptures, and an observation deck.
Mount Kamo has long been a site of local spiritual significance, developing as a sacred area centered around Aomi Shrine. In more recent history, the area was developed into a public park with a focus on preserving the natural habitat of the Yuki-tsubaki. During the Showa era, the park's functions were expanded through the installation of sculptures, playground equipment, and the establishment of the Squirrel Garden. Today, it serves as both a peaceful retreat for local residents and a popular destination for tourists seeking a close connection with nature and wildlife.
There are numerous spots within the park to enjoy the changing seasons. The most spectacular sight is the coexistence of Yuki-tsubaki and cherry blossoms in the spring. At the Squirrel Garden, you can observe free-roaming chipmunks up close; visitors can purchase food from a vending machine (Gachapon style) to participate in a feeding experience. The park is also dotted with various sculptures along the walking paths, allowing for a cultural stroll through undulating terrain. For a grander view, the observation deck offers a sweeping panorama of the surrounding mountains and the Kamo cityscape.
The park offers a different charm depending on when you visit. The peak season is from late March to mid-April, when the simultaneous blooming of the camellias and cherry blossoms creates a breathtaking landscape. Autumn also brings beautiful foliage. Regarding the Squirrel Garden, please note that operating hours vary by season. The standard hours are 10:00 to 16:00, but during the summer months (June to August), the garden remains open until 17:00. We recommend visiting in the gentle morning light or during the late afternoon.
Kamoyama Park is highly recommended for families with children. The most popular activity is feeding the chipmunks in the Squirrel Garden. For active play, the park features a roller slider and several other playground structures. The well-maintained walking paths and observation decks are also excellent for photography, light jogging, or a relaxing picnic. Observing animals and plants in their natural habitat provides an educational experience for children.

Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended due to the undulating paths. If you wish to feed the chipmunks, please ensure you have 100-yen coins ready. Food is purchased via a vending machine, so credit cards and electronic money are not accepted. As the chipmunks are living animals, please do not attempt to catch them or place your hands too close to them. Please note that the use of open flames (such as campfires) is prohibited, and vehicles are not allowed in the park. For professional photography, prior permission and a fee are required.
