Guide
Kamogawa Park is an expansive riverside park situated along the Kamo River, which flows north-south through the heart of Kyoto. This green belt, stretching long ways along the water, is a beloved destination for both locals and international visitors seeking a touch of nature within the urban landscape. The riverbanks are lined with various trees such as cherry, pine, maple, and elm, offering a different aesthetic with every season.
The Kamo River has long been a cornerstone of Kyoto's culture. Historically, it served as a site for purification rituals (misogi) and was even used in the traditional Kyo-Yuzen dyeing process. The current structure of the riverbank was shaped by river improvement projects following heavy flooding in 1935. This development created the wide, flat riverbed (takashiki) that is now used as a space for exercise, lawns, and leisure.

The scenery changes depending on which area you visit. For instance, the stretch from Marutamachi Bridge toward Kitayama Ohashi features well-maintained lawns and exercise areas, perfect for jogging along tree-lined paths. The area near Demachiyanagi, where the rivers converge, is a famous gathering spot. In winter, the area becomes a point of interest for nature lovers, as you might spot migratory birds like Black-headed Gulls.
You can enjoy a different landscape in every season: cherry blossoms in spring, the cooling breeze of summer by the water, vibrant autumn foliage, and migratory birds in winter. Daytime is ideal for a refreshing stroll or jog, while the twilight hours offer a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Please note that water levels can rise quickly during heavy rain or storms.

Visitors frequently use the park for jogging, walking, and relaxing by the water. The area also fosters environmental education; for example, the Kyoto Prefecture occasionally holds nature observation events like "Kamogawa Exploration! Rediscovery!" for elementary students. Taking a moment to sit and watch the river flow is a quintessential way to experience the tranquility of Kyoto.
As the Kamo River flows through the center of Kyoto, the park is surrounded by numerous sightseeing spots and restaurants. The area is strictly managed under landscape preservation guidelines; for example, the right bank between Nijo Ohashi and Gojo Ohashi features buildings designed to maintain the traditional aesthetic of the city.
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking or jogging. Since the park is an open natural space, please dress appropriately for the season and weather.
