Located in Takamori Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kamishikimi Kumano Korya Shrine is a highly mystical shrine nestled within a deep, lush forest. Its most striking feature is the countless stone lanterns lining the approach. The scenery, created by the interplay of verdant trees, moss-covered stones, and layers of lanterns, gives visitors the sensation of stepping into the world of an anime or a fantasy film. It is a rare and special spot where you can truly feel the breath of nature in complete silence.
The shrine has a long history deeply connected to Kumano worship. It reflects the ancient Japanese spiritual culture of finding divinity within nature, with its architecture seamlessly integrated into the surrounding environment. The number and arrangement of the lanterns represent a history of prayer and faith, serving not just as a tourist site but as a spiritual sanctuary. The current ethereal landscape has been shaped over many years alongside the rich natural environment of the Aso region.
The primary highlight is undoubtedly the approach lined with stone lanterns. The stone stairs leading to the shrine and the surrounding primeval forest vegetation also offer a unique landscape found nowhere else. The shrine reveals different expressions depending on the season. In the early summer, the vibrant fresh greenery is particularly beautiful, while in autumn, the surrounding trees change color, adding deep hues to the landscape. We recommend visiting during the morning when soft light filters through the trees, or during the late afternoon when shadows deepen, as these times highlight the sculptural beauty of the lanterns. However, since it is located within a forest, visiting during daylight hours is generally recommended.
The main activity here is a contemplative stroll through nature. Because the path involves stairs and uneven slopes, visitors are encouraged to walk mindfully, feeling each step. Photography is a very popular activity, as travelers capture the stunning lanterns and the surrounding natural beauty. It is a perfect place to spend quiet time reflecting on oneself amidst the stillness.
The area around Takamori Town offers beautiful views of the Aso caldera. There are also various sightseeing spots nearby that utilize Aso's famous spring water, as well as several hot spring (onsen) facilities. The area is an excellent driving route, making it easy to incorporate this shrine into a larger itinerary to enjoy the rich natural beauty of Kumamoto.
As the approach consists of stone steps and slopes, comfortable walking shoes (such as sneakers) are essential. Please note that cash is required if you wish to purchase amulets (omamori) or receive a temple stamp (goshuin). English support is limited, so it is helpful to be aware of basic customs beforehand. As this is a sacred site, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor. While photography is generally permitted, please be considerate of other worshippers and avoid obstructing their path.
