Kamishichiken, located in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, is the oldest flower district (hanamachi) in the city. Along the eastern approach to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, traditional teahouses (ochaya) with historic architectural styles line the streets, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. More than just a tourist spot, this is a living cultural space where Geiko and Maiko continue to refine and pass down their traditional arts. The history of Kamishichiken is said to stem from seven teahouses built using materials from the reconstruction of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. An anecdote involving Toyotomi Hideyoshi notes that the teahouses presented a famous delicacy called 'Mitarashi Dango' during a grand tea ceremony at Kitano, which is the origin of the 'Itsutsu Dango' crest still used today. Despite changes in the Nishijin textile industry after the war, the area has preserved its traditional culture. In 2010, the Kaburenjo (dance rehearsal hall), which retains Meiji-era architectural styles, underwent major renovations to ensure the preservation of the landscape and heritage.
The greatest charm of Kamishichiken lies in its historic streetscape and the traditional events held within it. The Kamishichiken Kaburenjo is particularly famous for hosting high-level dance performances such as the spring 'Kitano Odori' and the autumn 'Kotobuki-kai.' Additionally, during the summer, the area comes alive with 'Beer Gardens' hosted at the Kaburenjo and surrounding facilities. Simply walking through the area allows you to feel the breath of old Kyoto, surrounded by a beautifully preserved historical atmosphere.
Events in Kamishichiken change with the seasons. Spring features traditional dance performances, summer offers refreshing beer gardens, and autumn hosts gatherings to showcase artistic mastery. The beer gardens held from July to September are especially popular for enjoying the evening atmosphere. At night, the lights of the street illuminate the stone-paved paths and traditional buildings, offering a completely different, enchanting mood compared to the daytime.

For instance, during the summer beer gardens, guests can enjoy food and drinks in an open, festive atmosphere using the Kaburenjo's gardens, interior rooms, and even the riverside railings. Kamishichiken is located very close to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, making it a common practice to visit the shrine and the district together.
