Kaminoshima Church is a Catholic place of worship located in Kaminoshima-cho, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Completed in 1897, this single-story brick building features a white exterior and serves as one of the landmarks of Nagasaki, visible from the entrance of Nagasaki Port. It is a historic structure that has long supported the faith of the Christian community on the former island of Kaminoshima.
Kaminoshima has a history of harboring 'Hidden Christians' (Kakure Kirishitan) since the early Edo period. During the late Edo period, Christians who arrived from the Sotome area settled here alongside those engaged in coastal defense construction. In 1876, a temporary chapel was established, leading many Hidden Christians to officially return to the Catholic Church. The current building was designed and constructed using the personal funds of Father Durand, who settled in the area in 1892, and was completed in 1897. The church remains deeply rooted in the community as a testament to a faith that survived through periods of intense religious persecution in Nagasaki.
The greatest highlight is its stunning exterior and architectural structure. While originally a brick structure with a plaster finish, it was later renovated with a lime and cement coating, resulting in its current brilliant white appearance. The sight of the church, visible even from ships departing Nagasaki Port, creates a breathtaking landscape integrated with the sea. Inside, a quiet and sacred space unfolds, symbolizing centuries of religious history.
During bright daylight hours, the white exterior walls contrast beautifully against the blue sky and sea. Because the church can be viewed from the sea, enjoying the view from a boat or along the coastline is a wonderful way to experience it. Please note that access to the interior may be restricted during Mass or other religious ceremonies/weddings, so it is advisable to check in advance.
