Kaminari Falls is a breathtaking natural landmark located in Takayama Village, Nagano Prefecture. It is celebrated as one of the three great waterfalls of Takayama Village and was designated as a scenic beauty of the village in 2003. The waterfall drops 30 meters with a width of 5 meters, flowing over a tuff breccia cliff-face formed by the erosion of the Matsukawa River. The most distinctive feature is the cavernous hollow behind the falling water, which allows visitors to stand behind the falls and view the scenery from within. This unique structure has earned it the nickname 'Urami-no-taki' (the waterfall you can see through/behind).
There are several theories regarding the name 'Kaminari' (Thunder) Falls. It is said to be named either because the splashing water looks like lightning strikes, or because the deep, booming sound of the water resembles a roll of thunder. For generations, it has been cherished as a significant part of the local natural landscape.
The highlight of the visit is the ability to enter the space behind the waterfall. It is a rare experience to be able to observe the water cascading directly above you while looking out at the landscape from a sheltered vantage point. The sight of the relentless water spray against the sheer, rugged cliffs creates a powerful and mesmerizing atmosphere that draws visitors from near and far.
The landscape surrounding the falls undergoes dramatic changes throughout the year. From spring to summer, the area is enveloped in lush, vibrant greenery. In autumn, the scenery is painted with brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red as the foliage changes color. Please note that the area is subject to seasonal closures during the winter months (from late November to early May); it is highly recommended to check local conditions before visiting. Visiting during daylight hours ensures the best visibility of the water's movement and the surrounding flora.
Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks through the surrounding natural environment. The experience of standing behind the waterfall is a unique way to connect with the power of nature. For a more extended stay, the area features nearby hot spring facilities and an auto campground, allowing you to immerse yourself in the wilderness. Some nearby facilities also offer e-bike rentals for cycling enthusiasts.
Near Kaminari Falls, you can find relaxing hot spring-related facilities such as the Matsukawa Asaya Onsen 'Taki-no-yu.' The 'Shiawase no Mori Takinoyu Auto Campground' is also adjacent, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Additionally, the 'Yataki' area, another beautiful spot to experience the nature of Takamayama Village, is located nearby.
As the terrain can be slippery, please wear sturdy, non-slip walking shoes. Because you may get wet while standing behind the waterfall, bringing a raincoat or wearing clothes that can easily be washed is recommended. While the area itself is a free public space, nearby facilities may require cash or credit cards. English-language signage is limited, so it is wise to check maps in advance. Please respect the environment by taking all trash home with you and following local nature conservation rules.
