The Kami-San-Ichi Aquatic Botanical Garden is a serene botanical destination located in the Kami-San-Ichi district of Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. Spanning an area of approximately 22,000 square meters, the garden is home to about 30,000 plants across 300 different species. The garden is thoughtfully organized into several zones designed to showcase plants adapted to various environments, including aquatic, alpine, and dry-land species. This allows visitors to observe a wide range of natural ecosystems in one location. A unique feature of this garden is the presence of historic stone Buddhist statues (Yabu-butsu) scattered throughout the grounds, adding a sense of spiritual and cultural depth to the natural beauty of the flora.
The Kami-San-Ichi area has a long history of coexistence between humans and nature. The garden preserves more than just botanical specimens; it also houses cultural relics such as the 'Keyaki no Usu' (Zelkova Mortar), which symbolizes the traditional lifestyle and culture of the local Kami-San-Ichi residents. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to appreciate the intricate shapes and colors of the flora. As the final entry is at 4:00 PM, we recommend arriving with plenty of time to explore.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while learning about plant ecology. You can walk through areas that replicate alpine environments or wander near the water's edge to observe aquatic life. The garden offers a unique way to experience both natural beauty and cultural history simultaneously through the sight of the scattered stone Buddhist statues and the 'Keyaki no Usu' relic. The Kami-San-Ichi district is nestled within the rich natural landscape of Nikko. The surrounding area offers many scenic spots for nature lovers. Since it is easily accessible from other major sightseeing areas in Nikko, you can easily combine a visit to the botanical garden with a trip to nearby hot spring (onsen) resorts or other cultural sites.
Because the garden features diverse terrains—including rocky paths and damp areas—we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It is also wise to bring a raincoat or a sun umbrella to prepare for sudden weather changes. To protect the natural environment and the historical artifacts, please refrain from picking plants or touching the stone Buddhist statues.
