Historically, the region has placed a very high priority on balancing nature conservation with tourism. Strict regulations, such as private car restrictions, are in place to protect the environment, ensuring that the untouched wilderness remains preserved. There are numerous spots in Kamikochi that never fail to enchant visitors. The most iconic is 'Kappa Bridge.' From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Azusa River against the backdrop of the majestic Hotaka Mountains. Another mystical spot is 'Myojin Pond,' where the surrounding mountains are perfectly reflected in the mirror-like surface of the water. Additionally, the walking paths along the Azusa River are relatively flat and easy to walk, allowing even beginners to enjoy a stroll while admiring the beautiful mountain stream. Kamikochi reveals a completely different face depending on the season. In Spring (May–June), the fresh greenery is beautiful and the sight of melting snow rushing through the streams is a highlight. Summer (July–August) is the perfect season for hiking and camping in a cool, refreshing climate. In Autumn (September–October), the mountains are dyed in vibrant colors of autumn foliage, offering the most colorful scenery. A variety of activities allow you to experience nature with all your senses. Walking along the well-maintained paths is enjoyable for everyone from beginners to experienced hikers. You can also experience the luxury of spending a night under a starry sky at a local campsite. For more serious adventurers, Kamikochi serves as a base camp for climbing the surrounding high peaks. Whether it is the sound of the wind, the scent of the forest, or the clarity of the water, an immersive natural experience awaits.
Kamikochi is surrounded by several charming destinations. For example, it offers good access to Matsumoto City and Takayama via bus or taxi, both of which are famous for their historical streetscapes and hot spring (onsen) areas. The parking areas at Sawando and Hirayu serve as the primary gateways to Kamikochi; from these points, you must use public transportation to enter the protected area.
Because of the high altitude, you must be mindful of temperature changes regardless of the season. Temperatures in Kamikochi can be 5 to 10°C (9 to 18°F) lower than in the cities at the foot of the mountains, such as Matsumoto. Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so please bring a light jacket or layers. For hiking, comfortable walking shoes and proper gear are essential.
