Kamikawa Shrine is a significant spiritual site located within Kaguraoka Park in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. Historically classified as a Prefectural Shrine (Kensha), it is dedicated to a wide array of deities. The shrine grounds are remarkably spacious, covering approximately 50,754 square meters (approx. 1.3 acres), offering a harmonious blend of man-made sacred structures and the surrounding natural environment. It stands as one of the most important historical shrines in the Asahikawa area.
The shrine enshrines numerous deities, including Amaterasu Omikami (the Sun Goddess), Omikami, Sukunahikona, Toyouke-hime, and several others related to local history and the development of the region, such as the influential figures from the Nabeshima and Kuroda clans. These deities represent the deep connection between the local community and its spiritual heritage. One of the most significant dates for the shrine is July 21st, which marks the annual festival (Reisai).
The architectural highlight is the main shrine building, constructed in the Shinmei-zukuri style. The shrine building itself covers 105.6 tsubo (approximately 349.1 square meters), exuding a sense of sacred permanence. Visitors can enjoy walking through the vast grounds, observing the traditional layout and the way the structures integrate with the seasonal changes of the natural landscape. To ensure a respectful visit, please follow traditional shrine etiquette. Since the grounds are large and involve walking through a park setting, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please carry cash (Japanese Yen) for offerings (Saisen) or purchasing amulets (Omamori), as many traditional transactions are cash-only.
