Kamihatchi no Shidarezakura (also known as Hatchi no Higanzakura) is a historic weeping cherry tree located in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture. With an estimated age of approximately 500 years, this tree is a true marvel of nature. It stands about 15 meters tall, with a massive, sprawling canopy that extends 17 meters east-west and 22 meters north-south. This extraordinary structure makes it a legendary landmark of the region.
The tree is affectionately called 'Hatchi no Naesakura' because it blooms during the traditional season for preparing rice seedlings (naesaku). This connection to the agricultural cycle makes it a symbol of the local culture and heritage. Due to its immense historical and biological value, it has been officially designated as a Natural Monument of Gunmed Prefecture and has been cherished and protected by the local community for generations.
The most breathtaking feature is the sheer scale of its branches. Seeing the branches spread out across 17 meters east-to-west and 22 meters north-to-south, seemingly overlooking the surrounding landscape from its elevated position, is a sight unique to this location.
