Kamezuka Kofun Park, located in Sato, Oita City, is a historic park featuring one of the largest keyhole-shaped burial mounds (zenpo-koen-fun) in the prefecture. The mound, estimated to have been constructed in the early 5th century, measures 116 meters in length and reaches a maximum height of 10 meters. The park is a well-maintained historical site where the most striking feature is the ability to actually climb the mound to experience its massive scale firsthand. From the summit, an expansive and refreshing view stretches out toward the distant Beppu Bay.
This keyhole-shaped mound was built between the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The structure consists of three tiers, with the front section facing south and a specialized indentation (tsukuridashi) located at the waist of the mound. Traces suggest the mound was once covered in white quartz-based stones, highlighting its immense historical value. In 1996, the site was designated as a National Historic Site. The area has a deep connection to maritime-related cultures since ancient times, serving as a vital remnant of the region's historical-cultural heritage.
The greatest draw is the opportunity to climb the mound itself. As you follow the path from the front to the rear sections, you can observe the three-tiered structure and the remains of ancient features like cylindrical haniwa (clay figures). At the summit, a massive stone sarcophagus measuring 3.2 meters in length stands as a breathtaking centerpiece. Additionally, the adjacent Amabe Kofun Museum offers a multi-dimensional learning experience. The museum features precious funerary goods excavated from the site, large-scale dioramas recreating the construction of the mound, ironware replicas, and scale models of the reconstructed tomb.
Autumn, particularly October and November, is the best time to visit. During this season, the "Amabe Matsuri" festival is held, recreating ancient rituals. The event features people dressed in traditional ancient attire performing ceremonies, alongside hands-on programs such as fire-making, haniwa clay modeling, and magatama (bead) making, allowing visitors to feel much closer to history. During the daytime, the sunlight provides perfect visibility for enjoying the beautiful scenery from the top of the mound toward Beppu Bay.
There are various ways to engage with history here. The Amabe Kofun Museum includes a learning corner where visitors can explore the world of the Kofun period through video and mini-theater presentations. During autumn festivals, workshops that simulate ancient lifestyles are often available, providing a visual and tactile understanding of the historical background. Walking the slopes of the mound is more than just a stroll; it is a precious experience of feeling the ancient engineering and craftsmanship firsthand.
Kamezuka Kofun Park is situated in the Sakanoichi district of Oita City. The surrounding area is well-maintained as a historical site, offering a peaceful environment for a relaxing stroll. The park also features a complete parking facility, making access by car very easy. The surrounding routes offer scenic views of the sea and other historical landmarks within Oita City.
Because the mound involves climbing and has certain slopes and steps, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please respect the surrounding environment and follow local instructions while exploring the museum and the park grounds.
