Kamese Tunnel is a facility located on the border between Osaka and Nara Prefectures, directly related to the Kaminose Landslide Prevention Project. This area features essential infrastructure such as drainage tunnels and water collection wells designed to prevent landslides, alongside the historic Kamese Tunnel of the former Osaka Railway. By participating in a guided tour, you can explore underground structures and railway relics that are invisible from the surface.
The area holds a significant history; in 1931, a major landslide caused the Yamatogawa River to be blocked and resulted in the collapse of a railway tunnel. To combat these geological-scale challenges, modern drainage tunnels, piles, and water collection wells have been installed underground. Additionally, the "Old Osaka Railway Kamese Tunnel," discovered during construction, serves as a vital historical relic showcasing the architectural techniques of the era and the history of natural disasters. This tunnel, which remained intact despite the 1932 collapse, stands as a precious historical resource.
The tour focuses on two main aspects: landslide prevention structures and historical ruins. First, you can observe the "No. 1 Drainage Tunnel" and "Water Collection Wells," which serve the distinct roles of draining and collecting water to stabilize the ground. Second, the "Old Osaka Railway Kamese Tunnel" features impressive English-style brick walls and ceilings that still bear the soot marks from passing steam locomotives. During the tour, these historical structures are beautifully illuminated using projection mapping, creating a breathtaking visual experience.
Tour schedules vary depending on the season. During the summer (July 1st to September 30th), start times are adjusted to help visitors avoid the peak heat. Additionally, schedules differ between weekdays (Wednesday and Friday) and weekends/holidays. There are also different options between the Short Tour and the Long Tour, so please check the duration and coverage in advance to plan your visit.
The experience is centered around volunteer-led guided tours. There are two main types: the "Kaminose Short Tour" (approx. 45 minutes) and the "Kaminose Long Tour" (approx. 90 minutes). The Short Tour covers the Kaminose Landslide History Museum, the entrance of the No. 1 Drainage Tunnel, and the Old Osaka Railway Kamese Tunnel. The Long Tour includes a specialized guide for the Japan Heritage "Ryutado Ancient Road & Kaminose," providing deeper insights into the local landscape, including Kaminose Rock, the Ryutado Ancient Road, and the Fourth Yamatogawa Bridge.
