Kamejo Park is located in central Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The park was developed on the site of the Honmaru and Ninomaru areas of Tsuchiura Castle. The name "Kamejo" (Turtle Castle) originates from the historical fact that the castle was surrounded by moats, resembling a turtle shell. As the first designated historical site in Ibaraki Prefecture, the park provides a unique space where castle ruins and lush nature coexist. Visitors can see significant structures such as the Yagura-mon gate and the East and West Turrets (East and West Yagura), which serve as important reminders of the region's storied past.
The site holds immense historical value as it occupies the former grounds of Tsuchiura Castle. During the Meiji era, the area was developed into a public park following a donation from a Viscount of the former Tsuchiura Clan. The park preserves not only its architectural heritage but also the local culture and natural beauty that have been passed down through generations. Today, it serves a dual purpose as both a protected historical site and a peaceful recreational space for local citizens.
The park is dotted with various remnants of Tsuchiura Castle. The Yagura-mon gate and the East and West Turrets are particularly noteworthy, offering a tangible connection to traditional Japanese castle architecture. Nature lovers will also appreciate the presence of a 500-year-old Chiku (Shii) tree, a designated Prefectural Natural Monument that symbolizes the area's rich biodiversity.
