Kameike Park, located in Sakai, Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, is a scenic park centered around a massive reservoir constructed during the Edo period. This reservoir was originally built by Isobe Izawa to provide irrigation for the surrounding farmland. With a surface area of approximately 130,000 square meters and a water capacity of about 540,000 cubic meters at full capacity, it is one of the largest of its kind in Wakayama Prefecture. It has even been selected as one of the "Top 100 Reservoirs" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, highlighting its historical and regional importance.
The history of the Kameike reservoir dates back to 1710 during the Edo period. It was completed by Isobe Izawa to irrigate the surrounding fields, a massive undertaking that reportedly involved 55,000 workers over a period of three months. This reservoir enabled rice production for ten surrounding villages. A significant cultural landmark within the park is the Soseikaku pavilion, located on an island in the middle of the lake. Originally a villa for the Kishu Tokugawa family, the structure was moved to its current location in 1968 after being built under the Wakaura Toshogu shrine in 1917. The building features a unique structure with four central pillars, similar to the construction methods used for castle keeps and five-story pagodas.
The most spectacular sight is the approximately 2,000 cherry trees that bloom in the spring. During early April, the "Sakura Matsuri" (Cherry Blossom Festival) brings the area to life with a sea of pink blossoms surrounding the water. Another must-see is the Soseikaku pavilion, a precious architectural treasure that preserves historical building styles. The park also features a well-maintained 4km walking path, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the serene lakeside environment.
The most highly recommended time to visit is early April, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. During this period, the park is vibrant and lively. Regardless of the season, visiting during daylight hours offers the clearest views of the expansive reservoir and the historic architecture. For any special events such as evening illuminations, we recommend checking the latest information before your visit.
The park offers a peaceful 4km walking path for nature lovers. However, to protect the environment and ensure safety, activities such as boating, fishing, or barbecuing are strictly prohibited. Additionally, as the area is designated as a wildlife protection zone, capturing or hunting local wildlife is forbidden. Please enjoy the natural scenery quietly and respectfully.
Kameike Park is surrounded by various spots where you can enjoy the natural beauty of Wakayama. It is also accessible to other major tourist facilities, such as the Natural History Museum and the famous Wakayama Marina City, making it a great starting point for exploring the region.
For a comfortable stroll, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and casual clothing. Please remember that fishing, barbecues, and boating are not allowed. As the area is a wildlife protection zone, please do not disturb the local fauna. Regarding payments, while entry to the park is free, please carry cash or a transportation IC card (like Suica/Pasmo) if you plan to use nearby facilities or parking.
