Kakushuji is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple located in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. Known as the mountain temple of Tsugaru, it has played a vital role in history as the family temple of Tamenobu Tsugaru, the founder of the Hirosaki Clan. The temple grounds are home to magnificent structures designated as Important Cultural Properties, including a luxurious lacquer-decorated mausoleum and a traditional thatched-roof main hall, making it a profound symbol of the history and culture of the Tsugaru region.
The history of this temple dates back to the early 17th century during the early Edo period. It is said that Tamenobu Tsugaru originally established the site near present-day Fujisaki Town, before it was moved to its current location by the second lord, Nobuhari Tsugaru, to serve as a memorial site for his father. Although the temple has faced fires throughout its history, it has been meticulously restored and preserved. The surrounding grounds, featuring ponds and double earthen walls, once served as a strictly managed sacred area for the clan founder, where access for even high-ranking vassals was heavily regulated.
The most significant attraction is the "Tamenobu Ryoya" (Tamenobu Mausoleum). This structure preserves the architectural style of the early Edo period, and its exquisite lacquer-work decorations—restored during a major repair in the Bunka era—are exceptionally luxurious and colorful.
