Kakundate Historical Village Aoyagiya is a facility located in Kakundate, Akita Prefecture, dedicated to preserving the 400-year history of samurai residences. The site preserves the poignant story of Tomi Aoyagi, the last female head of the Aoyagi family, and the historical lifestyle of the samurai class. Visitors can experience the depth of Japanese traditional culture through its classic architectural styles, beautiful gardens, and authentic exhibits.
The Aoyagiya family has maintained a long-standing lineage as a samurai house. Historical records from 1913 even note a 16-year-old bride passing through the Yakui-mon gate adorned in a magnificent ceremonial kimono. This rich heritage is reflected in every pillar and piece of furniture, embodying the pride and lifestyle of the samurai. The site is more than just a museum; it is a living testament to the weight of history and the passage of time.
The village features various buildings that demonstrate the structural design of a samurai residence. A particularly special highlight is the 'Omoya' (main house), which is only opened to the public under specific conditions, offering a rare glimpse into a private architectural space. Through guided tours that weave in historical narratives, you can learn about the significance of the pillars, beams, and the very spirit of the samurai. The facility operates year-round, but please note that closing times vary by season. From December to March, the closing time is moved up to 4:30 PM, so we recommend checking the schedule in advance. The spring and autumn seasons are particularly beautiful, as the vibrant natural scenery provides a stunning backdrop to the historic architecture.
Beyond standard entry, the village offers unique programs. For instance, the 'Omoya Exploration Premium Tour' is a limited-capacity experience held to protect the cultural assets. With a professional guide, you can explore the interior of the main house—including areas not usually open to the public—to gain a profound understanding of ancient living standards and architectural details. The site also features displays and experiences related to traditional culture, such as viewing or wearing samurai armor.
The Kakundate area is dotted with many other samurai residences and historic buildings.
