The Nanohana (rapeseed) fields in Kakuda City, Miyagi Prefecture, are an iconic symbol of spring's arrival. Approximately 2.5 million rapeseed flowers bloom along the banks of the Abuma River, creating a massive, vibrant yellow carpet that covers the landscape. During this season, you can witness a stunning contrast between the bright yellow blossoms, the clear blue sky, and the white, snow-capped peaks of the distant Zao mountain range, making it a truly spectacular sight.
Agriculture has long been the backbone of this region, and the cultivation of rapeseed flowers has been a cherished seasonal tradition for generations. Today, this tradition is celebrated through the 'Kakuda Nanohana Matsuri' (Kakuda Rapeseed Flower Festival), which is held in connection with the local community hub, 'Michi-no-Eki Kakuda.' It is a wonderful place to experience the local culture that lives in harmony with the natural cycles of the seasons.
The greatest attraction is the sheer scale of the yellow blossoms. Spanning over 3.2 hectares, the vibrant yellow flowers fill your entire field of vision with color. The open, airy location along the riverbank provides an unobstructed view of the landscape. During the festival period, the area comes alive with mini-stage performances and local market stalls, allowing you to feel the energy and hospitality of the local community.
The peak season for the rapeseed flowers is typically from early April to late April. For the best photography, we recommend visiting during the daytime when the sun is high; the sunlight makes the yellow of the flowers appear most vivid and brilliant. While the scenery in the crisp morning air is also beautiful, if you wish to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the local markets and stage events, visiting during the daytime is highly recommended.
Various seasonal activities are available around the fields. For example, pony riding experiences (additional fee applies) are a popular activity for families and children. Additionally, at the nearby 'Michi-no-Eki Kakuda' (Roadside Station), you can purchase fresh local agricultural products and enjoy delicious local specialties, such as authentic Neapolitan pizza or the colorful and unique 'Kakuda Rocket Soft Serve' ice cream. These culinary experiences allow you to enjoy the season through all your senses.
We recommend exploring the surrounding area during your visit. 'Michi-no-Eki Kakuda' is a vital hub for the community, featuring a pizza shop that uses a traditional stone oven imported from Italy, as well as shops selling local delicacies. Other nearby points of interest include Kakuda Castle and the Kakuda Space Center, where you can learn more about the region's history and scientific contributions.
As you will be walking across a vast riverbank area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since there is little shade, please bring a hat and sunscreen for UV protection. Regarding payments, please prepare cash for food and souvenirs at the roadside station and festival stalls, as credit card availability varies. While photography of the scenery is encouraged, please be mindful of other visitors. Regarding accessibility, please note that the riverbank terrain may have uneven surfaces or small steps, so please proceed with caution if using a stroller or wheelchair.
