Kakasu Takadai Park, located in Ginowan City, Okinawa, is a vital site for understanding the history of the Battle of Okinawa. Once known as the "Seventh Hill," this area was a site of fierce combat. Today, it has been developed into a park that fosters a deep desire for peace. From the observation deck, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view stretching from central to southern Okinawa, including a clear view of Futenma Base and the movement of US military aircraft, offering a unique perspective on the modern landscape of Okinawa.
This location holds immense historical significance. It was a place where many soldiers fought intense battles. Within the park, you will find various monuments, such as the "Kyoto Tower," which honors soldiers from Kyoto Prefecture, and various memorials dedicated to the local residents who lost their lives. The terrain-based fortifications and remnants of the combat-era structures remain in their original forms, creating a precious historical space that conveys the intensity of the past.
The park features several important historical relics for educational purposes. First, the reinforced concrete "pillbox" (tochika) served as a defensive position during the war. The walls, still bearing numerous bullet holes, vividly illustrate the severity of the fighting. Additionally, you can observe "陣地壕" (jinji-go/entrenchments) carved into the Ryukyu limestone, providing a deeper understanding of the living and combat conditions of that era.
Furthermore, the observation deck, designed in the shape of a globe, sits at the highest point of the park. From here, you can see the urban landscapes of Naha and Urasoe, the blue ocean, and Futenma Base. It is a particularly striking spot where you can visually grasp the current situation in Okinawa, as the takeoff and landing of US military aircraft (such as Osprey) are often visible.
The park is generally open to the public and can be visited at any time. During the bright daylight hours, the view from the observation deck is most vivid, allowing you to clearly see the surrounding towns and the color of the sea. If you are interested in aviation, a visit during weekday daytime is recommended, as US military aircraft movements are more frequent then. Regardless of the season, you can explore the historical sites while feeling the natural breeze of Okinawa.
This is more than just a scenic lookout; it offers a profound historical learning experience. By observing the interior of the pillboxes and the structure of the trenches up close, you can understand the reality of military bases during the war. The park is surrounded by the central Okinawa areas such as Ginowan City, Chatan, and Yomitan Village. Access from Naha Airport is relatively smooth via the expressway, making it a convenient stop during an Okinawa tour.
As the park is located on a high hill with some stairs and slopes, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since it is an outdoor activity, please prepare with a hat and sufficient water to protect against the sun.
