Kajo Park is a sprawling urban park covering approximately 35.9 hectares of the former Yamagata Castle site (a nationally designated historic site) located in the center of Yamagata City. Once the grounds of the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the Imperial Japanese Army, it has been transformed into a vast green space for locals and tourists alike. The name "Kajo" (meaning "Mist Castle") reflects its historical identity, and the castle's distinct layout is even visible from satellite imagery, making it a true symbol of Yamagata.
The castle was founded by Mogami Yoshihiro, one of the most prominent daimyo of the Tohoku region. In 1986, parts of the Ninomaru and Sanmaru areas were designated as national historic sites. Following World War II, the military facilities on the site were handed over to the city, and the area opened as a public park in 1949. Since then, a dedicated "Yamagata Castle Reconstruction Project" has been underway. This long-term effort has successfully brought the past to life through the reconstruction of the Higashi-Otemon Gate in 1991 and the Honmaru Ichimonji-mon Ote Bridge in 2006, allowing visitors to witness the grandeur of the original fortress.
The park is dotted with beautifully reconstructed historical gates and bridges. Notable landmarks include the Higashi-Otemon Gate (completed in 1991) and the Honmaru Ichimonji-mon Ote Bridge (reconstructed in 2006). A highlight for many is the imposing equestrian statue of Mogami Yoshihiro, which provides a striking visual connection to the era of the samurai. Additionally, the park houses cultural facilities such as the Yamagata City Local Museum (formerly the main building of Saiseikan Hospital), showcasing Meiji-era architecture amidst a natural landscape.
The scenery changes beautifully throughout the year. The most popular time to visit is from early to mid-April, when the many cherry blossom trees are in full bloom, creating a stunning pink landscape. In winter, the area hosts special events like the "Winter Festival Yamagata Winter Flower Fireworks Display in Kajo Park." Whether you are visiting for a daytime stroll or enjoying the seasonal atmosphere, the park offers a harmonious blend of history and nature.
With its vast grounds, Kajo Park is perfect for walking tours to explore the castle ruins. You can observe the intricate details of the reconstructed gates, bridges, stone walls, and moats up close. The park also serves a recreational purpose, featuring sports facilities such as tennis courts, a Kyudo (archery) field, and open exercise areas. Visitors can also enjoy cultural stamp rallies that connect the historical buildings with local sightseeing.
The area surrounding the park is a cultural hub, home to the Yamagata Prefectural Museum, the Yamagata City Local Museum, and the Mogami Yoshihiro Historical Museum.
