Kajikawa Chisui Memorial Park is a beautiful park located along the Kajikawa River in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture. This location holds a storied history; it was once celebrated as having the most beautiful cherry blossom-lined paths in the world. Today, the landscape has been beautifully restored, featuring approximately 2,000 cherry trees that create a stunning canopy in the spring. The presence of the local water gate (suimon) adds a unique architectural element to the natural scenery, making it a perfect spot to enjoy the harmony of water and blossoms.
The history of this area is deeply tied to its cherry blossoms. At one time, a continuous line of roughly 6,000 cherry trees stretched for dozens of kilometers, earning praise as one of the finest views in Japan and the world. However, due to heavy flooding in the mid-1960s and subsequent river improvements, many of these trees were lost. In the following years, a dedicated movement to revitalize the area led to the replanting of the cherry trees seen today. Now, with about 2,000 trees, the park serves as a symbol of local resilience and a beloved landmark for the community.
The absolute highlight of the park is the cherry blossom tunnel created during the spring season. Walking through the path lined with 2,000 trees offers an immersive experience in nature. The sight of the cherry blossoms framed by the local water gate provides a distinctive and photogenic landscape that is highly popular among photographers. Depending on the year, visitors may even witness the rare phenomenon of plum blossoms and cherry blossoms blooming simultaneously.
The most recommended time to visit is during the peak bloom in April. During this period, the park is filled with visitors enjoying the full blossoms. A major highlight is the night-time illumination event, which often takes place during the blooming season. The lights are typically active from evening until around 10:00 PM, allowing you to see the ethereal glow of the cherry blossoms against the dark night sky. Please note that temperatures drop significantly at night, so bringing warm clothing is highly recommended.
The park features well-maintained walking paths, making it an ideal place for a relaxing stroll through nature. In the spring, you can enjoy a peaceful walk under the canopy of flowers. During special event periods, you may also encounter local food stalls, providing a wonderful opportunity to experience the local atmosphere and seasonal flavors.

When visiting for the night-time illuminations, please prepare for the cold. We strongly recommend bringing a heavy jacket or using heat packs (kairo) to stay comfortable. As this is a public park, please observe local etiquette and respect the environment. There are two designated parking areas available for visitors.
