Kaiyodo Hobby Museum Shimanto is a specialized museum located in the remote area of Iga, Shimanto Town, Kochi Prefecture. It showcases the history and vast collection of the world-renowned figure manufacturer, Kaiyodo. The facility was uniquely created by repurposing a former elementary school, a project born from the deep connection between the school's location and Kaiyodo's founder, Osamu Miyawaki. Inside, you will find an incredible collection of approximately 8,000 items, including figures and plastic models that are often considered part of Kaiyodo's private, unreleased archives. The exhibition space is truly one-of-a-kind, featuring everything from dinosaurs to beautiful character figures and incredibly detailed dioramas.
This museum is also a place filled with the spirit of the local community. It was constructed by renovating the former Iga Elementary School, which closed in 2008, with the goal of revitalizing the area and bringing new energy to this rural region. The establishment was made possible due to the founder's personal ties to this land. Thus, the museum serves not just as a display facility, but as a vital part of local community revitalization.
The exhibits are incredibly diverse. You can explore the early history of Kaiyodo through specialized corners or view the impressive Catalan ship model on the first floor. The collection features breathtaking works by famous sculptors, including highly detailed dinosaur figures and character figures with exquisite craftsmanship. One of the most striking features is the massive dinosaur head figure and the intricately detailed dinosaur dioramas that create a lifelike world. From the latest figure releases to rare, high-value collectibles, the museum allows you to systematically learn about the evolution of the hobby world.
Please note that operating hours vary by season. From March to the end of October, the museum is open until 18:00. From November to the end of February, it closes at 17:00. During the summer vacation period (from the 4th week of July to the end of August), the museum remains open without scheduled breaks, making it a great destination for long-term travelers. Additionally, special exhibitions are held periodically; visiting during these times allows you to enjoy unique themes. We recommend checking the official schedule in advance, as there may be special evening events or limited-time displays.
Beyond just viewing, you can actively participate in the hobby culture. The "Diorama Workshop" is a popular program where you can experience the art of diorama making firsthand. During special exhibition periods, events such as gallery talks by guest speakers may also be held. These are precious opportunities to deepen your understanding of sculpting techniques and world-building. It is a place where you can move from being a spectator to a creator or a student of the craft.
