The Kanmon Kaikyo Fireworks Display is a large-scale event held on both sides of the Kanmon Strait. Originally a local event for Shimonoseki City, it has been established as a major event for the entire Kanmon district since 1988. Because fireworks are launched from both shores simultaneously, spectators enjoy an expansive and immersive view of the display.
The festival began in 1985. While it started as a single-city event in Shimonoseki, it has evolved into a significant regional event for the Kanmon area. At one point, it was developed as the "Asia Port Festival in KANMON," reflecting its role as a culturally significant event deeply rooted in the local community.
The most distinctive feature is the simultaneous launch of fireworks from both sides of the Kanmon Strait. The sparks rising from both shores create a unique visual experience that integrates the fireworks with the natural scenery of the strait. The sight of countless fireworks illuminating the night sky is a view unique to this region.
The event is typically held around August 13th. As a summer night event, it takes place during the evening hours. The most spectacular moments occur when the fireworks illuminate the night sky and their light is reflected beautifully on the surface of the sea.
As a large-scale fireworks display, it attracts a massive crowd. Visitors can experience the spectacle of fireworks being launched from both sides of the strait, choosing to view the display from either the Shimonoseki or Kitakyushu side.
Near the venue, you can visit popular sightseeing spots such as Mojiko Retro. On the Shimonoseki side, there are many dining options and local markets, such as the Karato Market, and various facilities around the Dan-no-ura area.
