Kaichu-doro (Sea Road) is a spectacular 4.75km roadway that stretches from the Katchery Peninsula in Uruma City, Okinawa, connecting the islands of Henza, Hamahig, Miyagi, and Ikei. This road is famous for its open, breathtaking views, as it runs directly over the ocean. The bridge is designed with a relatively low height, allowing drivers to feel as though they are gliding just above the surface of the sea. Along the route, you will find the "Umi no Eki Ayahashi-kan," a perfect spot for resting and shopping.
Before this road was built, residents of these islands had to rely on walking through shallow waters during low tide or using small boats during high tide. The opening of this road in 1972 revolutionized local life, and it was expanded to two lanes in 1999. Today, it serves a dual purpose: a must-visit scenic route for tourists and a vital lifeline for the local island communities.
The greatest thrill of Kaichu-doro is the panoramic view of the ocean expanding to both sides of your vehicle. A key stop is the "Umi no Eki Ayahashi-kan," where you can purchase unique local specialties from Uruma City. The facility also houses the "Marine Culture Museum" on the second floor, featuring models of traditional Okinawan wooden boats called "Marlan ships" and exhibits on local shipbuilding techniques. From the nearby Yabuchi Bridge, you can also enjoy the view of the illuminated road at night.
The road is open 24 hours a day, making it accessible at any time. During the day, you can witness the mesmerizing shifts in the color of the sea under the sunlight. At night, the area may feature seasonal light-ups, creating a beautiful reflection on the water. In early April, the area hosts the "Ayahashi Kaichu Road Race." Interestingly, travelers may sometimes witness a phenomenon called "Katabui" (split rain), where one side of the road experiences clear skies while the other side experiences rain due to local weather patterns.
This area is perfect for driving, cycling, and jogging. You can also enjoy various marine leisure activities in the surrounding waters. The Road Park located along the way offers a great place to take a break and soak in the scenery. At the Umi no Eki Ayahashi-kan, you can explore local history and shop for authentic Okinawan products.
Crossing the Kaichu-doro provides access to the beautiful islands of Hamahig, Henza, Miyagi, and Ikei. Nearby attractions include the Nuchi Masu Salt Factory, Kabau Banta (scenic viewpoint), and Ikei Beach.
