Kai Zenko-ji is a prominent Jodo Shu Buddhist temple located in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. It is said to have been established by the famous daimyo Takeda Shingen, who brought the sacred deity from the Zenko-ji temple in Shinshu during the Third Battle of Kawanakajima. The temple grounds are home to numerous significant cultural assets, including the Sanmon Gate and the Kondo (Main Hall), both of which are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The history of this temple dates back to the Sengoku (Warring States) period. It began when Takeda Shingen moved the sacred Zenko-ji Nyorai statue and other Buddhist figures to prevent them from being destroyed during the conflicts in Shinshu. During the Edo period, it functioned as a large-scale religious center with many sub-temples and held a significant connection to the Tokugawa Shogunate. Today, it continues to serve as a vital center for local faith and a sanctuary for preserving Japan's historical and cultural heritage.

Standard visiting hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. However, during special "Gokaijo" (Sacred Unveiling) periods, the reception time is extended from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visiting during these unveiling periods allows you to witness special Buddhist ceremonies and traditional rituals. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to easily appreciate the intricate details of the architecture and the surrounding gardens in a peaceful atmosphere.

During your visit, you can participate in traditional customs such as receiving a Goshuin (temple stamp/calligraphy). The temple offers various prayer services (Kigan), including blessings for safe childbirth, warding off evil, academic success, and traffic safety. You can also collect unique Goshuin featuring beautiful paper designs (available in colors like red, navy, brown, and green), which serve as a meaningful souvenir of your spiritual journey in Japan.

Surrounding Area

Located on the northern edge of the Kofu Basin, the temple is surrounded by the scenic mountains of Itagakiyama and Mt. Ogasayama.
