The Kanagi Kagura Co-performance Festival is a spectacular event held in Kanagi-cho, Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture, showcasing the art of Iwami Kagura. This festival brings together various local troupes (shachu), centered around the traditions of Kanagi-cho, to display their mastery and passion. Held annually on the third Sunday of March, it is a wonderful opportunity to experience the strength and beauty of this deeply rooted traditional performing art as spring arrives.
Iwami Kagura is a traditional form of Kagura (sacred dance) passed down through generations in the western part of Shimane Prefecture. This festival serves a vital purpose: to pass the torch of Iwami Kagura to the next generation. Supported by the local community and the troupes of Kanagi-cho, the event is much more than just a performance; it is a crucial pillar for the preservation and transmission of regional culture.
The highlight of this festival is the diverse range of performances by multiple troupes. You can witness legendary stories through dramatic plays such as Jinmu, Yorimasa, Tenjin, Jinrin, Yamato Takeru, Michigaeshi, Kurozuka, and Oeyama. The unique charm of this co-performance event is the ability to see the distinct styles of each troupe, the intense-paced movements, and the exquisite traditional costumes all in one place.
The event is held on the third Sunday of March every year. The doors open at 9:00 AM, with performances starting at 9:30 AM and concluding around 3:45 PM. Since the performances begin early in the morning, we recommend arriving at the Kanagi Sogo Taiikukan A Arena as soon as possible to secure a good view of the energetic dances in the pleasant spring air.
Beyond watching the dances, visitors can engage deeply with the culture through various activities. The Kagura Experience Corner offers a rare chance to touch the traditions, such as learning about the making of Kagura tools or the process of putting on traditional costumes. Additionally, a bazaar area will be set up, featuring various food stalls and local refreshments to enjoy during the festival.
The venue, Fureai Gym Kanagi (Kanagi Sogo Taiikukan A Arena), is located in Kanagi-cho, Hamada. The surrounding area features shops that deepen your understanding of Iwami Kagura culture and facilities selling local specialties. Exploring nearby sightseeing spots or local restaurants after the event is a great way to round out your trip.
As the venue is a gymnasium (arena), we recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement. Please prepare your clothing according to the March weather in Shimane.
