Located in Kajiyacho, Kagoshima City, Ishin Furusato Kan is a historical museum centered on the Meiji Restoration—a pivotal turning point in Japanese history. The Kajiyacho area is renowned as the birthplace of many influential figures of the era, including Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi. The museum uses advanced audio-visual techniques and life-sized robots to bring the passion and movement of history to life, making the past feel incredibly vivid and real.
Opened in 1994, the museum explores the era spanning from the Meiji Restoration to the Russo-Japanese War. The surrounding Kajiyacho area produced numerous historical leaders who shaped modern Japan. Notable figures include the "Three Great Nobles of the Restoration" such as Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, as well as Admiral Togo Heihachiro, General Oyama Iwao, and Prime Minister Yamamoto Gonnohyoe. The famous novelist Ryotaro Shiba once remarked that the entire history from the Meiji Restoration to the Russo-Japanese War could be experienced within this single district, highlighting its profound cultural significance.
The museum is divided into two primary exhibition areas: the "Way of the Heroes" on the 1st floor and the "Way of the Restoration" on the B1 level.
On the 1st floor (Way of the Heroes), visitors can explore exhibits regarding Atokim (Tensho-in), the traditional Goju education system of the Edo period, and the theme of "Satsuma Looking at the World." The displays include models of the Shoheimaru ship, exhibits on the origins of the Japanese flag, and detailed records of figures like Saigo Takamori.
On the B1 level (Way of the Restoration), the experience becomes much more immersive. Alongside a detailed model of the Kajiyacho area, visitors can watch dramatic performances using audio and visual effects. A highlight is the life-sized robot presentation featuring Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, which provides a dynamic and moving way to experience historical figures.
While there are no major seasonal changes, it is highly recommended to check the performance schedule before your visit. The B1 level features specific shows: the "Way to the Restoration" is performed 7 times a day, and "Satsuma Student, Heading West" is performed 6 times a day. Aligning your visit with these times ensures a deeper experience. The museum also attracts many visitors during periods of high interest in Japanese history, such as when major Taiga dramas are broadcast.
The centerpiece of the museum is the dramatic performance in the Ishin Experience Hall on the B1 level. The use of life-sized robots creates a sense of presence, making it feel as if historical figures are standing right before you. Additionally, the thematic exhibition rooms provide deep insights into the Shuseikan industrial projects, the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance, the Restoration of Imperial Rule, and the movement to overthrow the Shogunate. These exhibits go beyond simple viewing, helping visitors understand the social structures and political shifts of the time.
The area surrounding the museum is dotted with monuments marking the birthplaces of famous historical figures. The entire Kajiyacho district carries a deep historical context; after learning at the museum, you can walk through the neighborhood to visit these monuments for a more three-dimensional understanding of history. There is also a zone introducing Kagoshima's local tourism and specialties, making it a great base for your Kagoshima journey.
