The Kagawa Prefectural Museum is a multi-functional museum dedicated to the research, study, exhibition, and hands-on learning of Kagawa Prefecture's history, folklore, and art. By combining the functions of a history museum and an art museum, it allows visitors to explore the multifaceted identity of Kagawa. Located in the northern history and culture zone of Takamatsu city, it serves as a vital hub for anyone wishing to dive deep into the region's cultural heritage.
The museum aims to collect, preserve, and exhibit materials related to the history, folklore, and art of Kagawa. It also manages two branches—the Kagawa Cultural Center and the Seto Inland Sea History and Folklore Museum—to support local cultural activities. The exhibits tell the story of Kagawa's formation, the lives of its people, and its artistic evolution through precious historical documents and artifacts.
The museum features diverse exhibition areas designed to deepen your knowledge of Kagawa's history and art. The second-floor exhibition area focuses on the history and folklore of the prefecture, tracing its progress from ancient times to the modern era. Additionally, the special exhibition room hosts large-scale, themed exhibitions that change periodically. The first floor also features an Isamu Noguchi corner, a library corner, and a cafe, providing a well-rounded cultural experience.
The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting during the daytime to enjoy the exhibits at a relaxed pace. Regardless of the season, you can enjoy the history and art in a comfortable, climate-controlled indoor environment. Please note that the last entry is at 4:30 PM. While re-entry may be possible depending on the exhibition, visiting during bright daylight hours allows for a more detailed observation of the exhibits.
Beyond just viewing exhibits, the museum hosts workshops and lectures. You can learn about Kagawa's culture through all five senses using historical materials and art. To assist international visitors, 10 portable ROM players are available for free loan in the history exhibition room, providing explanations in English, Chinese, and Korean. This helps ensure a deep and accurate understanding of Japan's historical background.
The museum is situated in the history and culture zone of Takamatsu. The historic Takamatsu Castle (Tamamo Park) is located immediately to the west, making it a seamless part of a historical walking tour. To the north lies the Kagawa Prefectural Hall (Lexam Hall). After your learning experience at the museum, a stroll through the ruins of Takamatsu Castle is highly recommended for a complete sightseeing experience.
