Located in Kami City, Kochi Prefecture, Kamino Park is a beautiful urban park that opened in 1978. It is widely celebrated as one of the 'Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan,' making it a must-visit destination during the spring season. The park is thoughtfully designed with a 'Recreation Area' that utilizes the natural terrain and a 'Green Zone' filled with diverse tree species, offering visitors a perfect environment to connect with the changing seasons.
Kamino Park has long served as a cherished community space for residents and visitors to enjoy the rich natural environment of Kochi. The park is deeply connected to local seasonal traditions and cultural events. For instance, it is often associated with the local atmosphere during the 'Hamono Matsuri' (Knife Festival), which coincides with the nearby Kochi University of Technology's campus festival. This connection makes the park not just a natural retreat, but a place where local culture and education meet.
The centerpiece of the park is the magnificent 200-meter-long 'Sakura Tunnel.' During the peak of spring, various varieties such as Somei Yoshino and Yaezakura bloom in a dense canopy, creating a dreamlike tunnel of flowers. During the blossom season, the park often features night-time illuminations where traditional lanterns (bonbori) light up the trees, revealing a completely different, mystical atmosphere compared to the daytime. Beyond the cherry blossoms, the park is home to diverse greenery including Yanasesugi, Sendan, and Kusunoki (Camphor) trees, with well-maintained paths for forest walking.
The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, but the most spectacular time to visit is from late March to mid-April. During this window, the entire park is bathed in soft pink hues. Visitors can enjoy peaceful daytime strolls or experience the magical night-time illuminations. Even outside of the cherry blossom season, the 'Green Zone' offers a refreshing experience as you observe the lush greenery and the subtle transitions of the natural world.
The park is divided into two main areas: the Recreation Area and the Green Zone. In the Recreation Area, visitors can enjoy open-air activities and social gatherings. In the Green Zone, the shaded walking paths through the forest offer a serene way to refresh your mind and body. If you visit during the local 'Hamono Matsuri' period, you can also experience the vibrant energy of the local community and university festivities.
Kamino Park is adjacent to the Kochi University of Technology. There are no strict boundaries like fences between the park and the university, allowing for a seamless flow between the two areas. The park is easily accessible by car and is surrounded by the beautiful natural landscapes of Kami City, making it a perfect stop on a scenic driving route through Kochi.
For a comfortable visit, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, especially if you plan to explore the paths in the Green Zone.
