Kagaku-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple located in Akō City, Hyogo Prefecture, with the mountain name Taiun-zan. The temple is renowned as the family temple of the Asano clan, the lords of the Akō Domain during the Edo period, and is deeply associated with the legendary Akō Gishi (the 47 Ronin). Within its tranquil grounds, you will find the graves of the successive lords of the Asano and Mori families, as well as the graves of the loyal retainers who became famous for the Akō Incident. It is a place of great historical weight, preserving the memory of a pivotal moment in Japanese history.
The history of this temple dates back to 1645 (the second year of the Shōhō era) when it was established by Asano Nagomasa, who had transferred from the Kasama Domain in Hitachi Province. The temple is inextricably linked to the historical events of 1701, involving the incident involving Asano Naozumi, and the subsequent raid on the Kira mansion by the Akō Gishi. The Mori family, who later ruled the Akō domain, also maintained the temple as their family temple. Following the Meiji Restoration, when parts of Akō Castle were dismantled, the Shioya Sōmon gate was relocated to this temple. Today, this majestic gate is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Akō City, preserving a piece of the region's architectural heritage.
