The Kaga Honda Museum is a specialized museum located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, dedicated to the study of samurai culture. It houses the heritage of the Kaga Honda family, who served as high-ranking officials (Karo) of the Kaga Domain. The collection is remarkably diverse, featuring authentic military gear such as armor (yoroi), helmets (kabuto), swords (katana), and spears (yari), as well as ceremonial items and historical documents passed down through generations. These artifacts offer a profound window into the daily lives and cultural traditions of the samurai during the Edo period.
The lineage of the Kaga Honda family traces back to Honda Masashige, the second son of Honda Masanobu, a key figure in the service of Tokugawa Ieyasu. As high-ranking retainers granted a 50,000-koku fief within the Kaga Domain, the family played a pivotal role in regional history. The museum originally opened in 1973 as the 'Hondo Collection Hall' to preserve approximately 1,000 precious items. Following various renovations and expansions, it now operates as the Kaga Honda Museum, situated within the grounds of the Ishikawa Museum of History.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is the collection of military equipment. Visitors can observe the intricate craftsmanship of exquisitely made armor, helmets, and weaponry used by the samurai. Additionally, the museum holds precious gifts received from the Maeda clan and significant historical documents. One of the most fascinating aspects is the legend surrounding the 'Murasame no Tsubo' (the 50,000-koku Jar), allegedly named by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which serves as a testament to the prestige and status of the Honda family within the Kaga Domain.
The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the fine details of the armor and ceremonial tools. Please note that from November to February, the museum is closed on Thursdays. It is also closed during the New Year holidays (December 29th to January 3rd) and during certain periods when exhibits are being rotated. Always check the schedule in advance to ensure a smooth visit.

Located on the grounds of the Ishikawa Museum of History, it is surrounded by several cultural landmarks such as the National Museum of Modern Art, Kanazawa, the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, the Ishikawa Prefectural Noh Theater, and the Honda no Mori Hall. You can easily combine your visit with a stroll through the famous Kenrokuen Garden or a visit to the Seisonkaku Villa to complete your historical tour of the city.
