The Kadokawa Musashino Museum is a five-story cultural complex that seamlessly integrates three functions: a library, a museum, and an art museum. The facility is defined by the iconic architectural design of the renowned architect Kengo Kuma. It serves as a hub for broadcasting diverse cultural themes, ranging from traditional books to modern art and pop culture. Under the supervision of figures such as editor-engineer Seigo Matsuoka and naturalist Hiroshi Aramata, the museum provides a deeply intellectual and sensory cultural experience.
Since its grand opening on November 6, 2020, the museum has been operated by the Kadokawa Culture Promotion Foundation. Its mission extends beyond being a mere repository for books and documents; it is a center for active cultural expression. With Seigo Matsuoka serving as the first director and Akira Ikegami as the second, the institution fosters a unique cultural identity by blending academic perspectives with popular culture. Please note that books are for in-house reading only and cannot be checked out or removed from the premises.
The most striking feature is the architectural-masterpiece by Kengo Kuma. The exterior, utilizing stone textures, and the sophisticated interior spatial composition offer visitors a truly unique sensory experience. The facility is divided into several areas—the library, the art museum, and the museum—each hosting diverse exhibitions covering everything from mainstream Japanese culture to niche pop culture and natural history.
The museum is open from 10:00 to 18:00 (last admission at 17:30). We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the interplay of natural light and the stunning architectural forms. The museum is closed on Tuesdays, though it may remain open on public holidays; please check the official website for the most current schedule. Visitors can immerse themselves in culture through reading and viewing curated exhibitions. The library area serves as a space for quiet contemplation and reading, while the museum and art sections offer opportunities for learning through visual displays. Audio guides are available to provide a deeper understanding of the exhibits. Please remember that books are for on-site reading only and cannot be taken out of the building.
The museum is located within the "Tokorozawa Sakura Town" area in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture. It is approximately a 10-minute walk from Higashi-Tokorozawa Station on the JR Musashino Line. For those traveling by car, there is ample parking available near the facility. Alternatively, you can reach the area via bus from Tokorozawa Station.
When visiting, please handle all books and materials with care. As books cannot be borrowed, please enjoy them within the designated reading areas. While there is no strict dress code, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended to enjoy exploring the large-scale architecture and exhibits.
